DJI unveiled its latest high-end drone for professional filmmakers today. The Inspire 3 is a full-frame 8K cinema drone in a "highly portable form factor" that can be yours this summer for a mere $16,499. The DJI Inspire 3 has a Zenmuse X9-8K Air Gimbal Camera with a wide range of dynamic colors and compatibility with various lenses. Its camera system has dual native ISO for clear low-light footage while covering over 14 stops of dynamic range to help capture highlights and shadows in sunrises and sunsets. It has a Tilt Boost and 360-degree Pan structures.

Turns out that DJI's Mavik wasn't the company's only new airframe for the year. On Tuesday, a pair of updated drone models joined the family: the Phantom 4 Pro and the Inspire 2. The Phantom 4 Pro (P4P) is the upgraded version of the Phantom 4 (P4), which debuted earlier this year. The P4, if you recall, integrated a suite of obstacle avoidance systems: a pair of stereoscopic sensors mounted on the front of the drone. The P4P builds on that system, adding a second pair of stereoscopic sensors on the rear of the frame as well as an infrared sensor on either flank. These IR sensors have a 7m range -- shorter than the 30m range of the front and rear stereos but still plenty farsighted to avoid sideswiping trees and fences.

Sometimes you need a cute little quadcopter to play with at a family picnic. Other times, you need a six-rotor pro-level monster drone that looks like it spends nights and weekends hunting for Sarah Connor. Like, say, the DJI Matrice 600. Unlike most drones you've heard of, the M600 does not work as a lazy dad-gift. At 4,600, only filmmakers, photographers and other professional need apply.
